Your Morning Glory: Coffee, Sex or Bacon?

 coffee or sex love

According to a recent study conducted by Le Meridien Hotels and Resorts, many folks would rather love coffee than a partner in the morning, IYKWIM. After surveying 7,455 male and female coffee drinkers from the U.S., China, France, Dubai, India and Germany, researchers found that 53% of the participants would rather wake up to hot java than hot sex. (They also chose coffee over other recreational activities, such as perusing Facebook.) Seventy-eight percent of participants claimed they would rather give up sex with their spouse for an entire year than surrender their morning coffee habit. (What?!?) Perhaps it’s not that shocking…

Four reasons people might choose morning coffee over morning sex:

They’re caffeine-addicted, and can’t function well without it. Caffeine is the most widely used behaviorally active drug worldwide, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine. Eighty to 90% of adults in N. America report regular caffeine intake, with an average equivalent of one to two standard mugs of coffee per day in the U.S. If you experience foggy thinking, irritability, headaches or nausea if your morning coffee is delayed, you’ve grown dependent. These symptoms of caffeine withdrawal, which has recently been added to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders as a condition, can definitely tinker with libido.

They’re sleep deprived. Sleep deprivation is epidemic in the U.S. The National Health Interview Survey showed that 30% of adults reported sleeping 6 or fewer hours per night between 2006 and 2007—and most of us need 7 to 8 nightly hours. Even an hour of sleep loss can have major detrimental effects, which is another topic entirely. From a sexual standpoint, getting enough sleep is important because exhaustion is the leading cause of low-sex drive. It only makes sense that morning caffeine, sleep loss and disinterest in sex go hand-in-hand.

They just REALLY. LOVE. COFFEE! And/or aren’t likely having frequent or mind-blowing sex anyway. Coffee may seem to trump sex if your sex life is lackluster, which can stem from a whole variety of factors, but there’s really no comparison between coffee’s flavor and pick-me-up perks  and the orgasmic euphoria of S-E-X. Both offer wellness benefits, but very few activities promote as much physical and emotional pluses as sensual play and climax.

They want to feel refreshed before getting down and dirty decadent. I can relate to this one. I generally prefer to at least empty my bladder and brush my teeth before engaging in morning sex. And if I wake up mentally hyper (a fairly frequent occurrence), I may need to run a quick lap beforehand. :)) If coffee is part of your wake up and face the day ritual, it makes sense that you might desire a cup or two before having sex. If you end up in a time crunch, having to choose one or the other, I recommend setting the timer on your coffee pot and moving it closer to your bedroom.

What about bacon?

I had to add bacon to the mix! When I posted this photo on the Girl Boner Facebook page, I was amazed by how many commenters voted for bacon! Only one other female and I said sex, hands down. Many guys demanded both.

I’ll admit, I don’t quite get the whole bacon craze that’s been happening lately. I don’t much like or eat it, partly for ethical reasons. Regardless of those…it’s just salty, aromatic meat! (Um…)

Apparently, many people disagree with me. A survey conducted by Maple Leaf Foods, Inc. showed that 43% of Canadians would choose bacon over sex, given the choice. Eighty-two percent of the respondents who reportedly love bacon also claimed to be great lovers, and 81 percent found bacon to be romantic. The meat’s aroma was a big draw for males.

What say you

Do you find it odd that many people reportedly enjoy morning coffee or bacon over sex? Are you one of them? How do you feel about morning sex overall? What other food/drink do you love nearly or as much as sex? I love hearing your thoughts! ♥

  1. Some of us awake very early in the morning so that we can commute to work. Drinking coffee helps get the day going. Morning sex is wonderful, but it encourages staying in bed. We don’t always have that luxury!

  2. I’m with you on bacon, and while I love the taste of coffee, I wake up to meditate for an hour. I have never been averse to sex any time but in my life that is now, meditation, yoga, and then coffee. My caffeine intake for the day amounts to two cups. Perhaps caffeine is most effective for me in combination with aspirin as a pain reliever. Wonderful post, August!

And yes, you and I write of coffee this week….

  3. Each to their own. Personally, I think coffee/tea and bacon can wait. 🙂

  4. So it’s more ethical to eat your eggs with ham or sausage than with bacon? lol

I want my coffee in the morning, but I don’t have to have it immediately. As for the main question, I’ll let those answer it who are young enough neither they nor their spouses have health issues that get in the way.

  5. Coffee is a wonderful way to greet the morning. Especially in Los Angeles. I take it out in the garden and sit in the sunshine among the flowers. Bacon… no way would I eat that. I love animals and pigs are incredibly smart, affectionate and sensitive. I really don’t understand the bacon craze either.

  6. Haven’t any of the poll takers had breakfast in bed with benefits? Sex if that’s only available. But muffins, coffee and foolin’ around is neat. Add Sunday papers and it’s fantastic.

  7. My issue with morning sex is frequently my mind is off on a different topic and my desire just isn’t there. However I suppose if I started having sex every morning I would get used to it, but I’d prefer to wait an hour or two so I can freshen up.

  8. That’s pretty strange … I think it’s a mix of people having unsatisfying sex and simply being SO addicted to coffee. People don’t even realize how addicted they are.

There’s one way you can have your sex and coffee. My good wife has been known to bring me an early morning coffee, she takes a mouthful of coffee, holds it there and slowly slides her lips over my penis. We call it a cocachino. One can also take a mouthful of coffee, hold it for a few moments, swallow it and then put a hot tongue on a by now very anxious clitoris. Your morning joe usually ends up cold but hey, we’ve been porking who cares right? So there you have it August, you can have sex, coffee and well, it sounds like bacon.
    Cheers
    Laurie.

I have to admit, I love to have sex in the morning. (Even though I admit as well, a quick bathroom visit before starting is a must for me. Pee, brush teeth and wash the sleep out of my eyes, then I’m ready.
I had expected this is because when I have the chance to do so, I’m together with my boyfriend who I haven’t seen for a while and we need to use the time we’re together.
But I really hope it won’t change once we definitely will live together… 🙂

    • I’m with you there, Raani! And am so happy to hear that you and your guy will be living together, yet savor the chances you do share now. 🙂

  11. I love that you added bacon to your research. In an ideal world, I would have all 3 at once because I’m a glutton for guilty pleasures. 😉

But I’m not at all shocked by the research. I found something while I was looking for facts to share on the work twitter account and I came across something shocking that like 7 out of 10 women would rather eat chocolate than have sex! I love chocolate too, but…

I think it’s like Emma said above, the bigger and sadder issue is that so many women (and I’m betting men too) have unsatisfactory sex lives, and we live in a society that still places a stigma around talking about it. The people that ARE talking about it (yourself included) get viewed as radical, and really, can we not talk about our own bodies without giggling or getting defensive? Wouldn’t that be nice?

I remember reading in school a chapter in a religion book titled “Heavy Petting is a No No”. #HeadDesk All the research shows that teens make smarter decisions about their sex lives with comprehensive sex education, including abstinence, but not limited to. And sex ed should not be fear based. Oh god, I had a sex ed packet to me at work from a school and it was nothing but powerpoint slides of STDs. I WAS SCARED. And sex does not have to be like that, especially when you’re first learning about it and deciding what is right for you and your body.

    • I’m so with you on taking the taboo out of sex talk, Jess! Doing so would enhance our sex lives, too, likely making all physical intimacy (including morning play!) more frequent and mind-blowing.

It’s remarkable how scary even the best intended education can make sex seem… (Heavy Petting is a No No? SERIOUSLY?!? Ugh.) So glad you’ve come so far in your journey. We can all make a difference simply by altering our attitudes and the course of our lives.

  14. Coffee and a bacon butty for me these days, I think one reason for that choice you missed out is that many of us though not past our prime do suffer from various ailments, I have had two spinal surgeries and need to be up and moving for at least an hour before I can risk an form of physical exertion, the prospect of agonising spasms and a trip to casualty are not exactly a turn on lol

  15. I think if someone chooses coffee over sex, their sexual experiences have been mediocre. There is no food I can think of that I would take over sex. Sex is awesome!! Morning sex helps give me an energy jolt to get started for the day.
